Mens Fraternity

We are calling all men to The Quest for Authentic Manhood.  Let's get clear what the Scripture tells us about God's plan for manhood, as husbands, as fathers, and spiritual leaders. This series, developed by Robert Lewis, has ignited men in thousands of churches across the country.  It has been a channel through which men find a more meaningful connection to their church.  Whether you have been a member of SMPC for 40 years or are just starting to visit, we invite you to join us for Men's Fraternity.

Finding Balance in a Tilted World?

by Tim Filston, pastor of Congregational Life

"If I could just get things balanced!" Balance is an elusive rabbit, but that doesn’t keep us from the chase. The hunt for balance is frustrating because it is like a threshold that moves just as you step into it. Perhaps balance is the wrong image, the wrong expectation. The idea that we can arrive at a point where all priorities stack neatly—and the time we have matches the demands for it—may be a myth. In fact, the more we believe that balance is just around the bend or even a summit we can scale, the more vulnerable we are to discouragement and burn-out.

Nevertheless, there is something that is worth pursuing—something where progress can be seen and measured. The word for it is INTENTION. Being intentional (proactive) is something worth going after because it is something in which anyone can mature at any point in life. Intentionality is the central feature of this year’s Men’s Fraternity series, Winning at Work and at Home.

During the fall and winter, 120 men have been gathering weekly to consider the touch-points of life—the key places where just a little more intent could become that ounce of prevention for personal and professional wellbeing.

For example, as fathers we all feel the creeping demands on our time. Under this stress, young dads who exclaim to their kids "You did it!" soon hear themselves saying, "Get it done!" Beginning as cheerleaders, celebrating and applauding each new step, we deteriorate into drill sergeants with a whistle and a clipboard, pointing out every flaw and misstep. Without intention, our parenting can become only critical and not constructive.

Josh McDowell once remarked: "Rules without relationships lead to rebellion." During these weeks of reflection and planning, these ten-dozen dads and soon-to-be dads are mapping priorities so that relationships may flourish, so that criticism may fall into a current of affirmation, and so that the "more-caught-than-taught" principle will work for and not against our efforts At Work and at Home.
