Church Library

What is the Library’s mission statement?
The purpose of the Church Library is to serve Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church congregation with inspirational reading, worship resources, teaching resources, and any other printed matter or media which would enrich the spiritual and intellectual lives of our members and fulfill the program ministries of the Church.

Our primary goal is to offer the best books in the field of Christian culture and faith. A secondary goal is to make available a selection of recreational reading – books for general and current interest – both fictional and nonfictional for all ages.

Who can volunteer in the Library?
Each Library book must be cataloged, labeled, covered and shelved. Our wonderful Library Volunteers do most of this work. Contact the Library Staff if you would like to join this team of volunteers.

How can I find the resource I need?
The Church Library catalog is being computerized. All our holdings are not yet in the system, so ask the Library staff for assistance in finding things you need. We use the Dewey Decimal System, and you will find charts and signs about the Library to help you in your search.

What type of resources does our Library provide?
Teaching, Worship and Group Resources

The Library has excellent resources for many of the Church programs for all ages. Resources include commentaries, theology, inspirational writings and devotionals; Christian writings and texts on Christian living; histories and doctrines of the Faith; and, the Church and family living and parenting.

Christian Fiction
The Christian publishing industry is at an all-time high, and writers of excellent Christian fiction are being published. Our Library has a growing collection of these wonderful books and tapes as well as some of the classics for adults, teens and children. If you haven’t taken advantage of this collection, you will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of writing that is being produced in Christian fiction.

Other collections
There are collections of biographies of famous personages and of Christians who’ve made a difference. There are self-help books, help with household maintenance, gardening, cooking, and pets. We have books on poetry, essays and quotations; histories of the United States, the World, and Israel and the Middle East.

Periodicals
The Library subscribes to several periodicals for research or for viewing by patrons who have a few minutes to sit and read in the Library Reading Room.

Children’s Literature
For our children, we have beautiful and wholesome fun picture books by Christian and secular writers.

For teens, there are the classics for teens and many wonderful single and series books created for teens by Christian writers – mysteries, suspense, science fiction, horse stories, historical fiction and romance.
The Library has many of the schools’ required reading books, but mostly we concentrate on having available the books that, because of their Christian content, our children cannot find at the public libraries. The children have a non-fiction section of Bible stories, science, biographies, history and biology.

Does the Library provide videos or audio tapes?
This Library has a growing collection of audio and video tapes and CD’s for both children and adults. They include a broad spectrum of subject types: Fiction, Non-Fiction, children, teens, and adults. Many of our multimedia materials are distributed by Focus on the Family.
